COMMISSIONING BESPOKE HANDCRAFTED FURNITURE
Your questions answered — from first enquiry to final delivery
Every piece we make begins with a conversation.
Here’s a guide to help you understand what commissioning truly bespoke, handcrafted furniture involves.
What exactly is bespoke furniture — and how is it different from "customised" furniture?
Bespoke furniture is designed and crafted entirely from scratch, exclusively for you. Every dimension, timber choice, joinery detail and finish is determined by your brief, your space and your vision. No two pieces are alike, and your piece will never be replicated.
"True bespoke must begin with design — it is not a piece from a catalogue with your colour chosen."This is fundamentally different from customised furniture, where you select options — a leg style, a fabric, a finish — from a manufacturer's pre-set menu. Customised furniture is a variant of an existing product; bespoke furniture is a new one. At Glencairn Furniture, every commission begins with a blank page.
What kinds of furniture can Glencairn Furniture make for me?
We specialise in fine cabinetmaking and furniture design across a broad range of pieces: dining tables, chairs, display cabinets, sideboards, whisky cabinets, console tables, desks, bookcases, beds, dressing tables and more. We also work on commissions inspired by our own in-house designs, which clients often wish to adapt to their own proportions or spaces.
If you have a piece in mind that doesn't fall neatly into a category, we welcome the conversation. Some of our most rewarding commissions have been the most unusual ones.
Why should I choose handcrafted furniture over high-quality retail furniture?
Retail furniture — even at the upper end of the market — is designed to appeal to many people and made to a price. Handcrafted bespoke furniture is designed for one person: you. It fits your exact space, reflects your precise aesthetic and is built with techniques and materials that prioritise longevity over margin.
"Fast furniture is becoming as common as fast fashion. At Glencairn, we offer a compelling alternative."Unlike mass-produced pieces, a handcrafted commission improves with age. The finest hardwoods develop character over decades; hand-applied finishes deepen with time. A piece made this way is not a purchase — it is an heirloom.
There are high quality furniture retailers in the UK. But none offer what a small, dedicated maker does: the direct relationship between the person who designs your piece and the person who builds it. At Glencairn, that person is the same.
How does the commissioning process work, from first contact to delivery?
Our process is collaborative and unhurried. It typically moves through these stages:
1. Initial Consultation — We begin with a conversation, in person at your home or remotely, to understand your vision, the space the piece will inhabit, your aesthetic preferences and your budget. There is no charge for this discussion.
2. Design Proposal — We develop detailed design drawings and photorealistic renders, present material samples and finishes, and walk you through how your piece will be constructed. We refine the design together until you are entirely satisfied.
3. Approval & Deposit — Once you approve the final design, a deposit is required — usually 50% — to confirm the commission and secure your place in our making schedule.
4. Making — Your piece is crafted entirely by hand in our workshop just outside Edinburgh. We can provide updates throughout the process and even work-in-progress photographs if required.
5. Finishing & Delivery — On completion, your piece is finished, inspected and delivered. Installation is included where required.
Do I need to have a clear idea before I get in touch?
Not at all. Many clients come to us with little more than a feeling — a mood, a room, a gap on a wall. Others arrive with detailed sketches and precise measurements. We work confidently with both.
Bringing images that inspire you — from interiors magazines, Pinterest boards, photographs of existing pieces you admire — is always helpful. The clearer the picture you can paint, the faster we can translate it into a design proposal. But instinct and conversation are equally valid starting points.
"A good designer's job is to extract a vision the client may not yet know how to articulate."How much does a bespoke piece of furniture cost?
Bespoke furniture is a significant investment, and it is worth understanding why. Unlike a retail piece where costs are spread across thousands of units, every hour of design time, every joint cut by hand and every surface carefully finished is charged to your single commission.
Materials — though we use only the finest hardwoods — typically represent 30–40% of the overall cost. The majority is skilled labour: design, making and finishing. Workshop overheads, tools and finishing materials account for the rest. Profit margins in craft furniture making are modest.

"Bespoke furniture is not in the hundreds but the thousands — and there is absolutely no upper limit to what you can spend."We discuss budget openly at our first meeting. If a project as conceived exceeds your budget, we will tell you honestly and explore whether design adjustments can bring it within range. We never waste your time — or ours — pursuing a commission that cannot be delivered well.
How long will my bespoke furniture take to make?
Timescales depend on the complexity of your piece and our current schedule. For a freestanding bespoke commission, lead times from design approval to delivery typically range from 6 to 12 weeks. If we are in high demand, commissions may need to be booked further in advance.
We always confirm your specific timeline at the outset. If you have a deadline — a house move, a special occasion, a renovation completion date — tell us early and we will advise honestly on what is achievable.
It is worth noting that some high-profile makers have lead times of 6–12 months or more. We work to ensure our commissions are completed with care and to schedule, without rushing the making process.
What deposit is required and what are your payment terms?
Typically, a 50% deposit is required on confirmation of the commission — with the balance paid on delivery. This is standard practice in bespoke furniture making, as significant design time and material procurement are committed before making begins. We discuss payment terms individually with each client and are transparent about every stage.
Once a commission is confirmed and deposit paid, any design changes requested late in the process may incur additional costs — particularly once making has begun. We guide you carefully through the approval process to avoid this.
What timbers and materials does Glencairn Furniture work with?
We work with a broad palette of fine hardwoods: oak, walnut, ash, cherry and mahogany. Each board is selected for its grain, character and structural integrity — no two pieces of timber are alike, which means no two commissions are alike.
For certain commissions we incorporate other luxury materials: fine leathers, quality fabrics, antique glass, 24 carat gilding, brass work, etc. We advise on material combinations that will age together beautifully.
How does Glencairn Furniture approach sustainability?
Sustainability is at the core of our philosophy — not as a marketing position, but as a genuine commitment. We source timber from responsible, FSC-certified suppliers wherever possible.
The most sustainable piece of furniture is one made so well it is never thrown away. A Glencairn commission is designed to last generations. Unlike the fast furniture cycle, where pieces are discarded after a few years, bespoke handcrafted furniture is an act of environmental responsibility. Our philosophy of "less is better" is a direct counter to the disposable culture that dominates modern manufacturing.
We are members of the Scottish Furniture Makers Association and the Fine Furniture Guild, where sustainability in craft are foundational principles.
What techniques does Glencairn Furniture use, and why does it matter?
We combine traditional cabinetmaking techniques with modern precision tools where they serve the quality of the final piece. This is not nostalgia; it is pragmatism. Joints designed for hand assembly fit more precisely and are more durable than machine-cut equivalents. Traditional finishes penetrate and protect timber in ways synthetic coatings do not.
Richard England, founder of Glencairn Furniture, trained with distinction at The Chippendale International School of Furniture — widely regarded as one of the world's finest schools of furniture design and making. This rigorous training in both traditional and contemporary methods informs every commission.
"Modern aesthetics married with traditional cabinetmaking techniques — this is the Glencairn difference."How should I care for my handcrafted wooden furniture?
Care requirements depend on the finish applied to your piece, which we will discuss during the commission process. Most of our pieces require very little maintenance — periodic waxing or oiling, depending on the finish. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and keep solid wood furniture away from heat sources such as radiators, which can cause movement and cracking.
We provide full care guidance with every completed commission. If anything ever requires attention — whether a finish needs refreshing or a hinge needs adjustment — we are always available to advise or assist. We stand behind every piece we make.
You can find out more about aftercare in our article How to Care for Your Bespoke Furniture.
Will my bespoke furniture hold or increase its value over time?
A well-made piece of bespoke furniture by an established maker has genuine potential to appreciate in value over time. Unlike mass-produced furniture, which depreciates the moment it leaves the shop floor, handcrafted pieces by named makers have a provenance and quality that collectors and interior designers recognise.
More importantly, a Glencairn commission is an heirloom: something to be loved in your lifetime and passed to the next generation. Its value is not merely financial.
Do you work with interior designers and architects?
Yes. We work closely with interior designers, architects and property developers, both on single statement pieces and on multi-piece schemes. We understand the need for precision, reliable lead times and clear communication when furniture is part of a larger project.
If you are a design professional, we are happy to discuss trade terms and project workflows. Our preference for close collaboration makes us a natural fit for discerning design professionals who will not accept compromise on quality.
Do you take commissions from outside Scotland?
Yes. While we are based in Edinburgh, we work with clients across Scotland and the rest of the UK. Initial consultations can take place remotely, and we regularly deliver and install commissions beyond Scotland. The design and making process remains the same wherever you are located.
How does Glencairn Furniture compare to other luxury bespoke furniture makers in the UK?
The UK has a rich tradition of exceptional furniture making. What distinguishes us is not merely quality — which is expected at this level — but the nature of the relationship.
At larger studios, your commission may be designed by one person and made by another. At Glencairn, the designer and the maker are the same person: Richard England, who holds a distinction from The Chippendale International School of Furniture. This continuity from first sketch to final surface means your piece carries a coherence and intentionality that is difficult to replicate in a larger operation.
For clients who value craft, transparency and a genuine personal relationship with their maker, Glencairn offers something rare.
What if I want something inspired by an existing Glencairn Furniture design?
Many clients are drawn to one of our existing in-house designs — a dining table, cabinet or chair — and wish to commission a version tailored to their own dimensions, timber choice or finish. This is entirely welcome. Our in-house designs serve as a creative starting point, not a fixed product.
If you see something in our portfolio that resonates with you, do share what you love about it — and what, if anything, you would change. That conversation is usually all we need to begin.
